The dream which turned into a nightmare is what the Wrultizer’s legions of fans will remember the 2009 cup final. Going into their fifth cup final in four years on the back of a holding league champions Burra to a 2-2 draw with only 10 men, spirits were high.
The match started at a furious pace with the Tizers having the early chances with Craig Jarvie, Danny Carter & Jamie Sim all causing the Burra backline problems. It looked as though only one team would open the scoring but it was Burra who took the lead with more than a bit of luck. Senturk burst into the box and fired in cross come shot which keeper Doull had covered only for it to ricochet of two defenders past the unlucky keeper. Burra upped their game and started to press and increased their lead when Danny Pirie sent in a delightful cross which skimmed of Adam Doull’s head and was meet by a stunning back heel volley by Bradley MacKenzie which crashed in to the top corner. An unstoppable goal, not according to Tizers resident “Enfant Terrible” Alan Smith who as usual had to remonstrate with his team mates until well after the game restarted. With the Tizers still arguing Burra had no Problem increasing their lead by another goal before half time. With the Wrultizers further hampered by the loss of injury and fatigue of David McShane & Niall O’Rourke.
Manager Adam Doull read the riot act at half time but was restricted to the changes he could make as with only three subs remaining and three players struggling with injury it was just a case of seeing how long each of the walking wounded could last. The stirring half time team talk seemed to work dividends as substitute James Manson released Danny Carter who raced clear to score his 60th goal for the club making him the all time leading scorer for the Tizers. The mercurial Manson was starting to run the show until a thunderous shot of his resulted in him kicking a lump out of the Seafield pitch and having to leave the field injured. This combined with a couple of other injuries left the Tizers having used all their subs but still having a few of their walking wounded on the pitch. As the game went on The Tizers had a few other chances but it was Burra who continued to take their chances to finish deserved winners 7-1. As usual though the Wrultizers team provided a lesson for teams on how to take defeats on the chin by partying all night with the Burra team.
